Decorative Concrete in Houston
Decorative concrete is regular concrete with a finish that adds pattern, color, or texture. It can look like slate, flagstone, brick, or natural stone. It costs less than the real thing, and it gives you one solid surface with no loose pieces to shift.
Houston is tough on outdoor concrete. Our clay soil swells when it gets wet and shrinks when it dries. Summer sun fades color and wears down sealer. Heavy rain tests every slope. That is why we treat the base as the most important part of a decorative job. A great pattern on a weak base will still crack and settle.
Slabs on Grade handles the whole job, from tear-out to the last coat of sealer. Decorative work is part of our residential concrete services for homeowners across the Houston area.

Types of Decorative Concrete Finishes

Stamped Concrete
We press large textured stamps into the concrete while it is still soft. The stamps leave the grain and joint lines of stone, slate, or brick. A base color plus a darker accent color gives it depth, and a sealer locks it in.

Stained Concrete
Stain goes on after the concrete cures. It soaks into the surface, so it does not peel like paint. Acid stain gives a mottled, marble-like look that turns out a little different on every slab. Water-based stain comes in more colors and looks more even.

Exposed Aggregate Concrete
We wash away the thin top layer of cement to show the small stones inside the mix. The result is a rough, pebbled surface with strong grip. It hides dirt well and works nicely on long driveways and busy walkways.

Architectural Concrete for Businesses
For builders, HOAs, and business owners, we handle architectural concrete work such as exposed aggregate and custom finishes. Larger jobs are covered by our commercial concrete services.
Stamped Concrete Patterns
The pattern is the first big choice, and it sets the look of the whole space. Ashlar slate uses squares and rectangles in a set layout, like the cut-stone patio in this photo. Flagstone and random stone patterns use uneven shapes that look like natural rock. Brick and cobblestone work well for borders and walkways. Wood plank gives you the look of a deck with no rot and no splinters.
Color is the second choice. Most stamped jobs use two colors. The base color goes into or onto the fresh concrete. A release agent in a darker shade keeps the stamps from sticking and settles into the low spots. That second color is what makes it look like real stone. Lighter colors stay cooler under the Houston sun, which matters around a pool.

Where Houston Homeowners Use Decorative Concrete
Decorative concrete makes the most sense on surfaces people see and use every day. If your slab is cracked, faded, or just plain gray, these are the places where a new finish makes the biggest difference.
Stamped Concrete Driveways
A stamped driveway boosts curb appeal from the street. We build it on the same 4,000 PSI, rebar-reinforced base we use for every concrete driveway installation.
Stamped Concrete Pool Decks
Pool decks need texture and grip. An anti-slip additive in the sealer helps bare feet stay put, and a lighter color stays cooler on hot afternoons.
Stamped Concrete Walkways
A stamped or exposed aggregate walkway ties your front door to the driveway. For plain paths and city sidewalks, see our sidewalk and walkway contractors page.
Why Hire Us as Your Stamped Concrete Contractor
- 01
Family-Owned Since 2010
Owner Jesus Jimenez grew up working next to his father in construction. He started Slabs on Grade with one truck in 2010. We have now served more than 1,000 customers, and the company is still owner-operated.

The Base Comes First
A decorative finish is only as good as what is under it. We clear out soft soil, compact the base, and slope it to drain. On driveways, our standard is 4,000 PSI concrete with steel rebar on 18-inch centers.

Installation Process
Start to Finish
Here is what happens from your first call to your final walkthrough.
Free On-Site Estimate
We come out, measure the area, check the soil and drainage, and talk through patterns, colors, and finishes. You get a written estimate with a clear scope.
Demo & Removal
If old concrete is in the way, we break it out and haul it off. We saw-cut clean edges where the new work meets your house slab or sidewalk.
Grading & Forming
We grade and compact the base so water drains away from your home. Then we set forms for the final shape, height, and edges.
Reinforce
Steel rebar goes in on chairs, so it sits inside the slab instead of at the bottom. It helps hold the slab together when the clay under it moves.
Pour, Color & Stamp
We pour, level, and float the concrete. Then we add color and press the stamps while it is still soft. Houston heat makes concrete set fast, so we plan the pour time and crew size around it.
Cure, Seal & Walkthrough
We cut control joints, rinse off extra release, and seal the surface. Then we walk the job with you. Foot traffic is fine after 48 hours, and a driveway can take cars after 7 days.
What Our Customers Say
How Much Does Stamped Concrete Cost in Houston?
A stamped finish costs more than a plain broom finish. It takes more material, more labor, and more skill to get right. We do not post one price per square foot, because every yard and every design is different. When you request a quote, you can pick a budget range from under $5,000 up to $40,000 and above. These are the things that move the price the most.
Size and Shape
Bigger areas cost more in total but often less per square foot. Curves, steps, and tight corners add forming and hand work.
Pattern and Colors
A single pattern with one base color and one accent color is the simplest. Borders, mixed patterns, and extra colors take more time.
Tear-Out and Site Prep
Removing an old slab, fixing low spots, or regrading for drainage adds to the job. It is also the work that keeps the new surface from settling.

Stamped Concrete Questions From Houston Homeowners

Get a Free EstimateIs stamped concrete worth it?
For most homeowners who want the look of stone or brick, yes. It usually costs less than natural stone or a paver job. It is one solid slab, so there are no gaps for weeds or ants to move into. The trade-off is upkeep. It needs a fresh coat of sealer every few years, and a cracked section is harder to match than a single paver. If you want the lowest cost and the least upkeep, a plain broom finish is the better pick. We can talk through both options at your free estimate.
How long does stamped concrete last?
With a good base and regular sealing, stamped concrete can last for decades. The slab itself lasts about as long as plain concrete. What wears first is the sealer and the surface color. Houston sun and foot traffic slowly wear the sealer down, so keeping it sealed protects the color and the surface. The base matters even more. That is why we spend so much time on grading, compaction, and rebar before the first truck shows up.
Is stamped concrete slippery?
It can be when it is wet. Sealer gives the surface a glossy coat, and a glossy surface gets slick in the rain or around a pool. The fix is an anti-slip additive mixed into the sealer. A pattern with more texture also helps. For pool decks and steps, we suggest both.
Does stamped concrete crack?
All concrete can crack, and a stamped slab is no different. Houston's clay soil swells when it is wet and shrinks when it dries, and that puts stress on every slab. We lower the risk with a compacted base, steel rebar, and control joints. The joints give the slab a planned place to crack. On a stamped job, we line them up with the pattern so they are hard to spot.
How often should stamped concrete be resealed?
Plan on resealing about every two to three years. Areas in full sun or with heavy use may need it sooner. Here is a simple test. Sprinkle water on the surface. If it beads up, the sealer is still working. If it soaks in and darkens the concrete, it is time to reseal. Regular sealing keeps the color bright and helps protect the surface from stains.
What is the difference between exposed aggregate and stamped concrete?
Stamped concrete is pressed with a pattern so it looks like stone, slate, or brick. Exposed aggregate has the top layer of cement washed off to show the real stones in the mix. Stamping gives you more design choices. Exposed aggregate has a rough, grippy surface that hides dirt well. Both are poured as one solid slab. You can also mix them, such as an exposed aggregate driveway with a stamped border.
Can you put stamped concrete around a pool?
Yes. Stamped concrete is a popular pool deck choice in the Houston area. Pick a pattern with good texture and a lighter color that stays cooler in the sun. Add an anti-slip additive to the sealer for better grip when the deck is wet. Tell us about your pool at the estimate, and we will plan the slope so water drains away from the pool and your house.
Do you offer a warranty on decorative concrete?
Yes. We give a written warranty on our workmanship. It covers structural defects caused by improper installation, base failure, or workmanship errors. It does not cover damage from tree roots, soil movement from outside events, or misuse. We walk you through the full terms before you sign anything.
