Much of the Houston area sits on clay that swells when it gets wet and shrinks when it dries. That movement pushes up on a slab after a storm and pulls support away in a dry summer. Concrete does not bend, so it cracks.
Hard freezes are rare here. Water and moving soil do most of the damage. That is why our crews spend so much time on work you never see once the pour is done:
- Grading the ground so water drains away from your house
- Compacting the soil, and adding base material where the ground is soft
- Setting steel rebar on chairs so it sits inside the slab, not under it

How to Choose a Concrete Contractor in Houston
Anyone with a mixer truck can pour concrete. Fewer crews take the time to build it right. Ask these questions before you sign with any concrete contractor in Houston, including us.
- What mix and thickness will you use? Get the PSI and slab thickness in writing. Our driveways use 4,000 PSI concrete poured 5 to 6 inches thick.
- How will you reinforce it? Ask about the steel and its spacing. We set rebar at 18-inch centers on driveways.
- Who pulls the permit? Texas has no statewide license for concrete contractors, so permits and inspections are your main check. Sidewalk and driveway approach work in the City of Houston right-of-way needs a Houston Public Works permit.

What Affects the Cost of Residential Concrete Work
We do not post one price per square foot. Two jobs of the same size can cost very different amounts. These are the things that move the number:
- Size and thickness. Bigger and thicker slabs need more concrete and steel.
- Tear-out. Removing and hauling off old concrete adds labor and disposal.
- Site prep. Soft ground, poor drainage, or a slope means more grading and base.
- Finish. A broom finish costs the least. Stamped, stained, and exposed aggregate take more time and material.
- Access. A backyard with no truck access may need a concrete pump.
- Permits. Work in the city right-of-way adds a permit and inspection.

Get a Free EstimateHow thick should a concrete driveway be?
We pour home driveways 5 to 6 inches thick with 4,000 PSI concrete and steel rebar at 18-inch centers. Four inches is a common minimum, but the extra depth and steel help a slab ride out Houston's shifting clay and carry heavier trucks. Patios and walkways carry less weight, so they can be thinner. We set the thickness for each job at the estimate.
How long does concrete take to cure?
Concrete keeps gaining strength for weeks. It reaches its full design strength at about 28 days, which is the standard point for strength tests. You can use it well before then. Hot Houston days can dry the surface too fast, so we use a curing compound to help the slab cure evenly.
How long before you can drive on new concrete?
Stay off it on foot for about 24 to 48 hours. Wait at least 7 days before you drive a car on a new driveway. Heavy trucks, trailers, and RVs should wait about 28 days. We give you exact dates at the walkthrough, based on the mix and the weather.
Is a concrete patio or a paver patio better?
Both work well here. Poured concrete costs less up front, has fewer joints for weeds, and can be stamped or stained. Pavers cost more to install, but one cracked paver can be lifted out and replaced, and the joints let the surface flex a little as clay soil moves. We install both, so we have no reason to push one over the other.
Why does concrete crack?
Almost all concrete cracks a little. It shrinks as it dries, and in Houston the clay underneath swells and shrinks with the weather. Control joints give those cracks a planned place to form. Wide cracks, cracks with one side higher than the other, or cracks that keep growing usually point to a base or drainage problem. That calls for a real repair, not just caulk.
Do I need a permit for concrete work in Houston?
It depends on where the work is. In the City of Houston, sidewalks and driveway approaches in the public right-of-way need a permit from Houston Public Works. Suburbs and HOAs set their own rules. We check the rules for your address and pull the permit when a job needs one.
Do you offer a warranty on residential concrete?
Yes. We give a written workmanship warranty. It covers structural defects caused by improper installation, sub-base failure, or workmanship. It does not cover damage from tree roots, soil shifts caused by outside events, or misuse. We go over the full terms with you before any work starts.
